WHY USE THE SELFCHECK CHOLESTEROL LEVEL TEST?

This simple home test allows you to check your total cholesterol level, to ensure it is healthy. Total cholesterol take into account both good cholesterol (HDL) and bad cholesterol (LDL).

A raised cholesterol level which is over 200mmg/dL is a risk factor for conditions like arteriosclerosis and chronic heart disease.

Additional risk factors include being overweight, smoking, family history of heart disease, high blood pressure and age. If someone has 2 or more indicators of an increased risk then cholesterol levels should be checked.

Early detection means medical intervention can be initiated thus preventing a serious cardiac event.

The SELFCheck Cholesterol Level Test requires a finger prick blood sample and provides results in less than 5 minutes.

HOW AND WHEN DO I PERFORM THE TEST?

Please read instructions enclosed within the product on how to perform the test and get results.

For optimum results, the test should be carried out on an empty stomach and patient should not have eaten or drunk anything for 12 hours prior to carrying out the test.

For accurate results, perform the test first thing in the morning.

    WHO IS THIS TEST FOR?

Men and women aged 40 years and over and those with diabetes or who have a family history of heart disease are at a greater risk of coronary heart disease and so should test their cholesterol more frequently.

    HOW TO READ YOUR RESULTS

Result below 5.0mmol/l – healthy reading level, which is the target for most people

Result between 5.0mmol/l – 7.5mmol/l – this reading indicates high cholesterol

Result above 7.5mmol/l – this reading indicates very high cholesterol

WHAT IF THE RESULTS SHOW RAISED CHOLESTEROL LEVELS?

Please make an appointment with your GP to discuss your results. No medical decisions should be made without consulting a doctor.

Trying to adapt a healthier lifestyle and eliminating certain risk factors such as cutting down smoking and drinking alcohol, adding more fruit and vegetables to your diet, doing regular exercise, may help reduce cholesterol levels.
